Texas Shacking With Many Eartquakes: Government To Use TexNet Seismic Monitoring Network

Texas with increasing number of earthquakes is becoming one of the vast problems arising in recent times. For the state of Texas, coping and preparing for the seismic activity is one of the top priority tasks now.

According to the UT News, stats show that the number of earthquakes for the entire state has increased in recent times. Between the years 1980 and 2010, only one to two earthquakes were reported per year for the state, but between the years 2010 and 2015, the rate changed to approximately 15 small earthquakes per year.

This is not the end, from the stats of Center for Integrated Seismicity Research (CISR), which is an earthquake research center, reported that in the year 2016, the number of earthquakes rises to 28 in a single year. This sounds alarming for the state of Texas.

Phys.org reported that the TexNet Seismic Monitoring Network is the new technology used by the governing body in helping for locating and determining the origins of the earthquakes that are happening in Texas. Earlier in June 2015, Texas Government had an authorization of $4.47 million for TexNet.

"TexNet is an array of seismometers across Texas that helps us better locate and identify earthquakes, but also measure the levels of ground shaking from these events," Ellen Rathje, a co-principal investigator at CISR said. In the upcoming times, there is a plan for TexNet to install minimum 22 new permanent stations that are located across the state. These stations will be called as "TexNet's seismic backbone." 36 more portable stations will also be set up in the recent earthquake areas, apart from those 22 new stations.

The sensors in these stations will stream data in real time and transfer it to the Bureau of Economic Geology. With the help of these data, researchers will be able to understand the reason of occurrence of earthquakes or where is the seismic activity occurring. The working of TexNet will be considered as an example for the other states or even countries, which are facing a similar type of seismic problems.
