Very few countries in the world shelter one-horned rhinoceros. It is the need of the hour to increase the population of this rare and vulnerable animal.
Different reasons surface different times behind the extinction of rare animals. Now the one-horned rhinoceros is mainly available in the Asian continent, and the most valuable part of this rare animal is the horn. Every year a huge amount of money circulates and flows in the international black market regarding the rhino horns. Most of the times, these horns are used to create medicines in Southeast Asia and China.
Phys.org reported that conservationists in Nepal recently captured a one-horned rhinoceros in order to increase the population of this vulnerable animal. Five rhinos will be relocated in a national park of Nepal just a few days later. The aim is to establish a new breeding group.
The five rhinos include four female rhinos and one male rhino. The male rhino is twelve years old and first located by rangers in the Chitwan National Park in Nepal. Ram Chandra Kandel, the park chief, utters that this one-horned rhinoceros belongs to the dominant male category.
The team is aiming to capture another one-horned rhinoceros from the same park and later will depart for the Shuklaphanta National Park. The team will take some time to capture and deliver all the rhinos to their new destination. Apart from Nepal, India is also another country that contains a good number of rhinos.
One-horned rhinoceros is one of the first choices for the wildlife poachers. Just a few years ago the southern plains of Nepal consisted of a good number of rhinos. But, the increasing activities of the poachers and the human encroachment forced the rare species to become the vulnerable one. The number of the one-horned rhinoceros came down from one thousand to one hundred.
Currently, the total number of one-horned rhinoceros in Nepal is 645. The rampant poaching is no more taking place after the government intervenes and initiatives are on to conserve the animal. It is essential to increase the population of this rare animal after the decreasing trend of it.
According to WWF, the greater one-horned rhinoceros is considered as the largest one of the rare rhino species. The random killing of these innocent animals decreased the number heavily in the early 20th century. After strong initiatives and extreme conservation efforts, the number of the rare species increased. The increment was visible from the year 1975.
It is not an easy task to maintain the survivability of rare species that are vulnerable, but the continuous effort can bring some fruitful result. The conservation of the one-horned rhinoceros also unveils some effective outcome. Now it is time to increase the number of this animal to have a long lasting result.
