Samsung Embarks On 7th Generation AMOLED Display For Smart Phones: LG Plays Catch Up Starting With 6th Gen Panels

Samsung, the world's largest manufacturing conglomerate for cell phones is on its eye on the 7th generation AMOLED Display. Tentative distribution will be in the second quarter of 2018. LG is advancing its capabilities by setting its goals on its 6th generation OLED panels to catch up with the leader.

According to the CEO of the display research firm UBI, Yi Choong Hun, that it is best to focus its sights on the 7th generation AMOLED panels for better productivity. Yi claims that Samsung may have the present capacity to generate 7th Generation AMOLED as the company already had produced 8th Gen OLED for widescreens TV. It will not be difficult for Samsung to assemble its production line for the 7th generation AMOLED panels.

The issue in this premise is the procurement and assembly of equipment for catch-up companies aiming to score on OLED panels. Equipment like low-temperature polycrystalline silicon thin film transistor (LTPS-FTF), based deposition system, and fine metal mask (FMM) for the 6th gen panels that are essential for the process have to be set up. Catch up companies will have to deal with this, economic analysts say, as reported by The Investor.

AMOLED panels have little impact in terms of consumer benefit. The only significance of this production upgrade is the leadership and advancement of Samsung that had already been established.

Samsung Display, the dedicated department of Samsung Electronics Division producing these panels say that it has sold 95 percent of OLED for smartphones. An Apple device is set to come around later this year and Samsung is expected to be its major supplier for the AMOLED panels, as reported by Android Authority.

Phone Arena reports that the 7th generation AMOLED is an 880 ppi panel set neatly in place. Sources say that the foldable AMOLED panel is clear for the rare Galaxy X bendable phone. This type could be mass produced to test the surface of market acceptance. The 880 ppi AMOLED is said to equip the Samsung Galaxy S8 with an Ultra HD 4k resolution. The Note 8 and Phablet will also be furnished with an AMOLED 4k display.
