About a decade ago, it was reported that British government analysts had created a calculator that can estimate how long people live.
As specified in a Mail Online report, one is expected to reach 100 years of age in every five girls born in Britain. Whereas, according to the Office of the National Statistics or ONS, one in every eight boys in the same year has a little lower chance of becoming centenarians, in line with the historical trend of women who live longer than men.
On average, the agency also said that boys born in 2020 could anticipate reaching 87 years of age, while girls are likely to reach 90.
Despite figures showing that children born today can live to an older age than their parents, today's experts cautioned that life expectancy enhancements had been delayed.
Progress Delayed
Progress in the United Kingdom was already delayed before the COVID-19 crisis took off, stimulating much argument about the causes. Some people attributed the causes to "health cuts and austerity," a similar Angle News report said.
Nevertheless, experts have expressed fear this global health crisis has aggravated the issue, and there are already indications it has overturned some of the advantages in recent decades.
Separate numbers from the United Nations Population Division proposes the overall life expectancy of Britain throughout all ages and genders is approximately 81-and-half.
Meaning, the UK is ranked 29th in the world regarding life expectancy, with Hong Kong ranking the first in the worldwide chart at 85.3 years. To compare, the United States ranks 46th, with a life expectancy of 79.8 years.
Life Expectancy
Based on ONS data, 65-year-old people in the UK can expect to live, on the overage, 19.7 years more for males and 22 years more for females. This is estimated to increase to 21.9 years more for women who are 65 years old by 2045.
Analysts predict life expectancies for children born by 2045 to reach the age of 90.1 years for boys and 92.6 for girls.
However, the data suggest that girls born in 2020 are not expected to die almost five years earlier than forecast in 2012.
According to healthy lives assistant director David Finch at the Health Foundation, current figures reveal that children born today can still expect to spend longer lives than their parents.
A Major Challenge in Improving Life Expectancy in the UK
People presently living in the UK, though, are not expected to live for as long as previously estimated. Finch also said the unprecedented rise in deaths due to COVID-19 needs to end "as we move beyond the pandemic," although there will be a lasting effect from the decade of delaying life expectancy before the pandemic.
The assistant director continued, the government is facing a major challenge in delivering its commitment to improving life expectancy for those living in the UK.
Health needs enhancement should be a key consideration in all investment and government policy decisions, the vast majority of which have the potential to help or avoid initiatives.
Flinch also said; the pandemic has laid barre the degree of underlying poor health in the UK with adverse effects. He elaborated that good health is essential to the country's prosperity, and government cannot delay any further when it comes to investing in people's future, a similar Australian News Review report specified.
