Some couples find themselves not well-rested despite sleeping beside their loved ones. There are reports that among the reason is the nightly blanket tug-of-war. However, the Scandinavian sleep method could be the answer.

What Is The Scandinavian Sleep Method?

The Scandinavian sleep method involves cuddling your own individual quilt or duvet instead of sharing blankets with your bed partner. It's usually done without a top sheet. Apparently, it's your quality time between you and your comforter, Glam reported.

It got its name because this sleep method is fairly common in Scandinavian countries, including Denmark, Norway and Sweden. Some parts of Europe, like Iceland and Germany, also practice the same.

Scandinavian Sleep Method Benefits

Norwegian marketing director Sissel Himle told Popsugar that one of the key advantages of the Scandinavian sleep method is individual comfort, making quality sleep even more achievable.

Himle said in Oslo, they sleep with their windows open as often as the weather allows. This sleep method will enable them to wrap themselves in a cozy blanket when the temperature drops or shake it off when they feel warm. Sleeping with two duvets separately gives one complete control without distraction from their partner.

Amelia Jerden, a senior staff writer of Sleepopolis, experiment with the Scandinavian sleep method with her boyfriend. They loved the double-duvet system because she consistently has a cold body temperature, so she loves to wrap herself in her blanket. On the other hand, her boyfriend is like a human furnace.

After the experiment, she said her boyfriend was pretty much "converted" to the Scandinavian method. She also shared some of the things they loved about it.

They both loved cocooning in their own blanket. Her boyfriend said it was nice to cozy up without completely being separated.

Second, they loved that there was no blanket tug-of-war in the middle of the night. This was the biggest pro for them because, as Jerden said, they were notorious blanket thieves.

Third, they have complete control in adjusting their temperature without affecting the other. Jerden said she is a very cold sleeper and wants to keep her blanket up to her chin and she can do so without worrying that her boyfriend will move the blanket away.

Scandinavian Sleep Method Drawbacks

For Jensen's boyfriend, the biggest con was the lack of a top sheet, which reduced the warmth. According to Jensen, they ended up adding another blanket on top of their twin duvets.

Also, since this method requires two duvets, it means high up-front costs. Double comforters also mean a longer time to make the bed because it is trickier and more blankets to wash.

Many said the benefits outweighed the drawbacks because they enjoyed quality sleep after trying the Scandinavian sleep method. However, this might not be a good option for those who want to cuddle with their partners when they sleep.
