Sony's PlayStation Music platform backed by Spotify has launched for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. With the help of Spotify, Sony has been enable to bring more than 30 million songs and 1.5 billion different playlists, making it easier than ever for gamers to put a soundtrack to their gaming sessions.
Using the Spotify Connect feature available on both iOS and Android allows users to select a playlist, skip songs, adjust the volume, and much more using a smartphone or tablet, without interrupting the gaming experience. For those that don't have a smartphone or tablet, however, won't be able to change their music in the middle of game play. However, this is just the beginning of the partnership and one can expect that many more features will be coming as both companies work to provide the ultimate music experience.
"Music has always been a big part of gaming," Gustav Söderström, chief product officer at Spotify, said in a statement. "I remember playing computer games like Quake and Counter-Strike with my favorite tunes on in the background-taking the experience to a whole new level. With today's launch, we're bringing back that magic of gaming with music-all in a beautifully designed and smooth experience that looks great on the big screen."
Earlier this year Sony announced that it would shut down its Music Unlimited service and replace it with a new music service in partnership with Spotify, and today that service finally went live.
For those who are new to Spotify and don't want to spend $10 a month for a Premium subscription, Sony offers Music Unlimted subscribers two months free. New and existing users who have not previously tried the premium service, can receive one month of the service at not charge.
"PlayStation Network is the premier destination for digital entertainment and we're excited that millions of users around the world can now enjoy the most compelling music service on their PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 consoles," president of Sony Network Entertainment International, John Kodera says.
"With Spotify as the foundation of PlayStation Music, we'll continue to evolve the service to deliver the best entertainment experience that games have come to expect from PlayStation Network."
Sony's PlayStation 4 has been the current leader of the next generation of gaming consoles outselling the Xbox One since its release. With this new addition to the service, Sony has begun to add even more features to bring a more well-rounded entertainment system that goes far beyond traditional video games.
