Microsoft, for some time now, has restrained releasing new Microsoft smartphones into the market. During its partnership with iconic Finnish manufacturer Nokia, their Lumia devices were vaguely preferred but did have some solid build quality. Their last premium device was the Lumia 950XL that cost the same as an Apple iPhone.
The Redmond corporation is now primarily concentrating on improving their software segment as well as marketing premium devices through their 'Surface' branding that has increased the popularity of Microsoft devices in the recent days. A report from Forbes seems to suggest that a new Microsoft smartphone based on Windows 10 might be on the shelves by the end of the year.
Current CEO Satya Nadella has come out with a very intriguing statement mentioning that Microsoft plans to stay in the smartphone industry and will soon be releasing their smartphones. However, he didn't stop it right there but led an indirect hype train when he stressed that their new Microsoft smartphones will not look like any existing devices in the market.
It is true that Microsoft Surface devices are now increasingly more popular due to excellent build quality on all their devices. That said, he hasn't directly mentioned anything about the rumored Surface phone that is the only one left out in the competition so far. The release date for the new Microsoft smartphone is currently unknown. The company will be holding another special event on May. 23 where rumors indicate that a slightly better variant of the Surface Pro 4 devices will be unveiled while nothing has been confirmed yet.
Meanwhile, details from Gizmodo indicate that people are now moving away from desktops and laptops for a more portable device to fulfill their daily needs strongly suggesting, it is the right time for Microsoft to make a move for their next smartphone. At the moment, the markets are primarily dominated by three major corporations like Apple, Google, and Samsung. While Microsoft is not there yet, the new Microsoft smartphone might help them make their way through the competition.
